This article explains how to add competencies and link them to career paths on Deel.
What are competencies?
They are the necessary behaviours, skills, values, or knowledge that are expected of an employee in a role and level, e.g., verbal communication.
Why are competencies important?
Setting competencies in an organization has many benefits including but not limited to:
1. Define Expectations: They clearly outline what is expected from employees in various roles, helping to set performance standards.
2. Guide Development: They provide a roadmap for employee growth and development by identifying the skills and behaviours needed for advancement.
3. Ensure Consistency: They help maintain consistency across the organization by standardizing the criteria for different roles and levels.
Before you begin

- Must have Deel Engage enabled on organization.

How to create competencies
After building a career path, the next step is to create competencies and link them. To do that:
✅ Step 1 - Enter competencies page
On the Career tab, click on Competencies to move to its page
✅ Step 2 - Create competency
On the competencies page, click on the create competency button
In the popup modal, provide the following details: name, description, category, link name, url. There will also be a button to add skill level and if the competency is used in any career path, it will be indicated.
The name and the description of a competency help build expectation of what exactly it means within an organization. Each competency can be assigned to one or more categories, such as Product, Design, R&D, etc.
Skill level details can also be added to further explain what exactly is expected for each job level within a path and a framework. It is expected that less requirements are defined for a junior position compared to more senior positions where additional skill sets will be needed.
Use the create button in the modal to complete this process.
