Overview
With the On-Demand Payroll feature, clients can pay their employees outside of the normal payroll cycle from the Deel platform. Clients can make an off-cycle On-Demand payment to pay expenses, allowances, and bonuses to employees even after the payroll cut-off.
Clients can also pay employees their full salary up to one month in advance of payday.
To pay a single employee, for example, a bonus, backpay after a retroactive salary increase, a salary correction, or another one-off payment, use the single-employee On-Demand Payroll request described in the article below. A bulk request is only needed to pay several employees at once (see Bulk On-Demand Payroll Requests).
For a detailed breakdown on how to make an On-Demand Payroll (ODP) request, please see: How to request an On-Demand Payroll payment for an employee
- Adjustments and on-demand payroll requests cannot be deleted or edited after the payroll cut-off date.
- There is a $29 fee for each employee impacted by an On Demand Payroll request.
- Deel-initiated On Demand Payroll do not incur a client charge.
Before Starting
Requirements to Run an Off-Cycle for Direct Employees Payroll
- Entity must be fully onboarded (always required)
-
The first regular payroll cycle must be completed
- Exception: This requirement is waived only when the off-cycle reason is one of the two approved exceptions below.
- Missed payments on regular cycle (corrections/retro)
- Termination or termination-related payments
- Exception: This requirement is waived only when the off-cycle reason is one of the two approved exceptions below.
How the rules work:
• If the first cycle is completed: off-cycle can be created for any reason.
• If the first cycle is not completed and onboarding is also incomplete: off-cycle is always blocked.
• If the first cycle is not completed but onboarding is complete: allowed only for the two exception reasons listed above (please select one of them on the first step of the off-cycle creation flow).
About On-Demand Payroll for a Deel Employee
You will be paying the employee outside of the regular payroll cycle, and thus additional fees may apply. Fees will be listed on the page.
Clients cannot request an On-Demand Payroll until all pending invoices are settled.
Deel is able to provide an estimated calculation of applicable taxes upfront, but please note that these are estimates only, as the exact tax amounts can only be determined once the On-Demand Payrolls are fully processed. But these estimates give a clearer understanding of financial commitments by providing early insights into potential tax implications.
Important notes before you begin:
- Only one on-demand payroll request can be processed per employee simultaneously.
- To include new adjustments, please add them and approve them before creating this request.
- For salary advances, add them directly in the employee's contract page after creating this request.
Please note that all outstanding invoices must be paid before the payment can be processed to the employee.
Deel Employee On Demand Payroll process:
Create and approve items
New items must first be created under Expenses and fully approved before they can be included in an On-Demand Payroll. Clients can create On-Demand Payroll requests for existing expense items or salary advances.
Be sure to review and approve all pending items before proceeding, as only approved items are eligible for inclusion in an On-Demand Payroll request.
Submit request
We'll process the request and initiate the employee's payment within the next business day in the employee's country.
Payment reaches employee's account
Payments usually reach the employee's bank account within the next business day after payment initiation, but this will depend on the payment system in the employee's country.
Receive invoice
Once we process your request and send the payment, you'll get a separate invoice. Please note that it is possible for employee contributions to be invoiced on the next cycle.
Note: Country-specific ODP limitations
Some countries have technical restrictions that prevent On-Demand Payroll (ODP) from being processed while a regular payroll cycle is in progress.
United States: Due to a limitation in the local payroll software, ODPs cannot be run while a regular payroll cycle is being processed. Any ODPs submitted during this time will remain pending until the cycle is finalized.
Other countries: In some markets, ODPs may also be temporarily unavailable in the final days of the month once the monthly payroll run has been closed.
If an ODP is affected by these restrictions, payment will be processed automatically as soon as the payroll cycle is complete. Clients and workers may experience a short delay compared to the expected ODP payment date.
Timelines for On-Demand Payroll Payments:
There are different payout timelines depending on the employment type with Deel.
Deel Employees
It will take 5 business days total to complete an on-demand payroll payment for A Deel Employee.
Deel aims to process an On-Demand Payroll request within 2 business days.
There is then a standard 3 business day waiting period for the bank transfer to be reflected on the destination account.
Direct Employees
It will take 4-7 business days to complete an on-demand payroll payment for a direct employee.
This is slightly longer than the timeline for a Deel Employee On-Demand Payroll, as we must build in Client approval time for the payroll packages.
Salary Advance Timeline
- Submission: -2 Business Days from payday
- Processing: -1 Business Day from payday
- Approval: -1 Business Day from payday (same day as processing)
- Funding: -1 Business Day from payday (same day as processing)
- Payment Receipt: Payday
The termination payout requirements vary for each US state.
If the on-demand payroll is caused by a termination in a state where the termination payout deadline is lower than 3 business days, make sure to communicate the termination to Deel at least 72 hours in advance; otherwise, it won't be possible to meet the payout deadline.
There is a special timeline for the following countries:
Belarus, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Taiwan, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Jordan, Madagascar, Mozambique, Senegal, Thailand, Tunisia.
In these countries:
- Any off-cycle requests raised on or after the 20th of the month will be paid out on the first business day of the following month.
- Off-cycle requests raised before the 20th will continue to follow the current timelines.
On-Demand Payroll During Termination
Can clients make an On-Demand payment for a terminated employee?
Yes, where available, clients can request an On-Demand payment for a limited number of calendar days after an employee has been offboarded.
The request to make an On-Demand payment to an offboarded employee must be made within a few days of termination, and the timeline varies by country.
In some countries, clients have only a week to make the request, while in other countries it can be as much as four months later. In some countries, making irregular payments for a terminated employee is prohibited by law.
- If an adjustment has already been submitted for approval during an employee's termination process, do not submit an on-demand payroll request.
- All adjustments that have been submitted (but not yet approved) will be processed as part of the final payroll and paid to the employee following the termination.
Bulk On-Demand Payroll Requests
Clients can create bulk on-demand payroll requests to pay expenses for multiple Deel Employees or direct employees' payroll all at once.
Select the Payroll icon > Expenses tab, and then select the Employee tab.
Click the Create bulk on-demand payroll request button in the upper right corner.
You can manually select which employees to include in the request, or check the box to include all Deel Employees. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the payroll request.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I pay backpay, a bonus or another one-off payment to a single employee?
Create a single-employee On-Demand Payroll request. You do not need a bulk request for one employee.
In the left sidebar, expand People, then select Directory. Select the employee, open Payments, expenses & work submissions, select Add item, then select Create On-Demand Payroll. The full steps are in How to request an On-Demand Payroll payment for an employee.
Can I make an Off-Cycle payment after an employee is terminated?
Yes, in many countries, the On-Demand Payroll feature remains available for a limited time after an employee's contract has been terminated or marked as inactive.
Important: The post-termination ODP eligibility window varies by country.
If available, use the standard ODP flow (People > Employee > Payments, expenses & work submissions > On-Demand Payroll). The feature will remain available on the platform even for inactive contracts.
If you're unsure whether your country allows post-termination ODP or need the specific eligibility window, contact your Payroll Manager or account team.
Can clients pay an employee off-cycle without paying the fee?
Clients can request a fee-waived off-cycle payment by starting a live chat with a support agent or reaching out to their designated Customer Success Manager.
All requests for an off-cycle payment are carefully reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis.
Clients will receive confirmation of an off-cycle payment within 2 business days if their request is approved.
Deel will issue fee-waived off-cycle payments for three main reasons:
- Client request - Deel reserves the right to use our best judgment on whether the payment should be paid with a special off-cycle payment, or added until the next regular payroll cycle.
- Compliance - In many countries where we manage Deel Employees, certain payments (like terminations) must be paid out within a certain, urgent timeframe. These final payments need to be paid as a special off-cycle payment to make sure Deel complies with local regulations.
- Potential errors or mistakes - Mistakes happen. A client may make a human error while using the Deel platform, or a Deel group member may make a mistake in processing payroll. In some rare instances, a technical error could impact our payroll.
In any of these cases, Deel may use an off-cycle payment as a tool to correct for our clients and issue an instant payment to the employee.
Off-cycle payment requests may be accepted or rejected based on Deel review.
How much money can clients advance to employees?
Clients can give up to one full month's salary in advance if the Deel Employee lives in a country supported by On-Demand Payroll.
Select the Salary Advance option from the pop-up and then add the request details.
If autopay is turned on, is On Demand Payroll automatically paid after submission?
On-Demand payroll requests are always reviewed and processed by our teams and are not paid automatically, even if the autopay is turned on.
How will an off-cycle payment appear in the invoice?
If we approve an off-cycle payment, we will simultaneously issue an off-cycle invoice to clients.
Clients will receive a notification and be able to access it by selecting the Payroll icon on the home page.
Will employees know if something has been paid as an off-cycle?
During an off-cycle payment, Deel will issue a separate off-cycle payslip for the employee.
In many countries, these payslips can be provided instantly to the employee; but in some countries, an off-cycle payment will be reported only in the regular monthly payslip. Normal payroll cycle from the Deel platform with one click.
Can Deel process more than one Deel Employee off-cycle payment at a time?
Deel payroll managers can process multiple Off Cycles for an entity at once.
When 2 or more Off-cycle payments have been processed in parallel, clients will be presented with multiple Off-cycle invoices that can be paid separately or simultaneously.
What happens if an employee's off-cycle payment isn't processed?
If an EOR employee is not included in an off-cycle payroll run (e.g., the client opts not to submit them, or the request window is missed), their pay is not lost, it is combined with their next regular payroll cycle. For example, an employee missed for the June 15–30 off-cycle window will have that period's pay merged into the July 1–15 regular cycle and paid on the next standard pay date, with full gross recalculation applied as normal.
