This article explains how clients can easily create a Global Payroll contract to hire a direct employee.
With Deel Global Payroll, clients can easily run payroll for employees hired through their entities.
This process only applies if the organization does not have an HRIS, or if the client's HRIS is not integrated with the Deel platform.
Global Payroll must be enabled for the client's account to use this feature.

As a GP Client, you can create terminated contracts directly using the mass-import contract creation tool. This feature helps you efficiently manage parallel payroll, fulfill tax reporting, and keep historical employee records accurate and organized.

Create a Global Payroll Contract
✅ Step 1 – Create an Employee contract
Select the People Icon. Then, from the All People tab, click the Add People button on the top right.
Select Direct Employee to run payroll for an employee hired under the client's own entity.
If the client wants to use Deel as the legal Employer of Record (EOR) to hire the worker, select EOR Employee instead.
✅ Step 2 – Set Deel as the Payroll Provider
Clients must select "Deel is the Payroll Provider" for Global Payroll contracts
✅ Step 3 – Enter the Employee details
Provide the new hire's team Information, their personal details, and their contract location.
If an organization structure is configured by you, then you can also assign the worker an organization structure and configure worker relations while setting up their contract.
Select Continue.
✅ Step 4 – Enter the Job information
Provide a job title, location, and any supplementary information
Select Continue.
✅ Step 5 – Enter Compensation information
Enter the employment type, contract term length, annual number of vacation days, and other individual details.
The currency will be determined based on the employment country.
Select Continue.
✅ Step 6 – Choose Start Date
Deel will provide the client with the earliest possible start date that is permitted due to onboarding requirements.
This will depend on the country of employment and if the worker is a new direct employee or a transferred employee.
Transferred direct employees are workers who were transferred into Global Payroll from another vendor, and the client's existing entities are being brought into Deel.
In case the contractor has started several contracts with the company or comes back after some time away, the employment agreement contract start date still refers to the beginning of the contractor’s engagement with the company.
The Deel start date is the first date for which payroll will be processed for each contract.
✅ Step 7 – (Optional) Set up Employment Agreement
Clients can opt to use custom templates, upload an employment agreement of their own, or select to forego an employment agreement for now.
Select Continue.
✅ Step 8 – (Optional) Add Benefits and Extras to the contract
Clients can opt to add leased equipment, co-working space memberships, background checks and even equity grants to the contract.
✅ Step 9 – Review and Sign a new contract
Review the details and click the Edit button to make any changes to the newly created contract. When ready to create the contract, select Review & Sign.
Once the contract is created, Deel will invite the employee to complete onboarding. Clients can opt to send the invite to the employee's personal email address or a custom one.
- To include the employee in the next payroll cycle, they must complete their onboarding by the date shown on the platform. If onboarding isn't completed by then, their start date might need to be pushed back, and their payment could be delayed.
- If the employee is not invited to the Employee App, they will still receive an email to complete their identity verification process.

Select the team member who will sign the contract as a delegate.
Select Review Invitation and use the Message field to provide additional details, if needed.
Select Send Invitation.
To invite a team member who isn't listed, select Team Settings to grant a user Group Admin Access. Once they have access, clients will be able to select the delegate from the list.

To invite an external delegate, select Invite Externally.
Enter the external delegate's name, email, and phone number. Use the Message field to provide additional details, if needed.
Confirm the delegate's contact information and Send Invitation.
Once the Invitation is sent, select View Access Code.
The access code will be used to verify the external delegate's identity. Provide them with this code to grant them access to the contract.

Once the contract is created, Deel will invite the employee to complete onboarding. Clients can opt to send the invite to the employee's personal email address or a custom one.
✅ Step 8 – Confirm
After the client clicks Review and Sign, an email will be sent to the employee, using the email address provided during the contract creation process.
If the contract is still missing information clients will be notified to resend the invitation.
Create Terminated Contracts via Mass Import
By setting past contract end dates directly in the CSV, Clients can mass import terminated contracts. By doing so, the system automatically marks these contracts as Inactive, streamlining your record-keeping and ensuring accurate employee status updates.

Managing Global Payroll Contract
Direct employee payroll definite contracts do not extend or terminate automatically. Clients must decide whether to extend/renew the contract or initiate contract termination before each end date.
Definite Contract Notifications
Deel will notify clients when they have contracts nearing their end date so they can determine to move forward. Clients will receive a prompt on the Deel home page to review the contracts for direct employee payroll workers coming to a close.
Clients can also filter the People list to view all of the Global Payroll contracts with an upcoming end date
Select the People icon. Select the Filter Icon to apply an End Date filter.
Select a worker’s name to access their profile.
Extend or Terminate a Definite Contracts
When opening the profile of a worker whose contract will end within 60 days, clients will see a notification that the contract is Awaiting Details.
Select View Details to extend or terminate the contract.
If the worker has more than 1 contract, they will be able to Extend or Terminate each one individually.
- To Extend the contract, clients will be prompted to select whether the renewed contract will be Definite (with a set end date) or Indefinite (without a set end date).
- To Begin Termination, clients will be prompted to enter details for a regular contract termination request.

FAQs
[ACCORDION] How soon will an employee be paid after they are onboarded at Deel?
When a Global Payroll contract is created with the desired contract start date, clients will see a message on the platform informing them when the employee's first payroll cycle will be.
The employee must be fully onboarded by the date listed in order to process the payroll report.
If the employee is not fully onboarded on time, then it may be necessary to push their start date forward.
[ACCORDION] What happens if a direct employee isn't onboarded before the payroll cut off date?
If the employee is not fully onboarded on time, then it may be necessary to push their start date forward and delay their first payday.
[ACCORDION] Can clients choose to activate the employee contract immediately?
Depending on the country, clients may be able to have the contract start immediately, or even a past date.
However, many countries require at least four business days before an employee contract can be activated.
[ACCORDION] Will Deel also be the payroll provider for the employee?
When a new contract is created for Direct Employee-Payroll, clients will choose if they want Deel Global Payroll to handle payroll, taxes, compliance, and more; or if they
want to export the payroll report to their own provider and only manage employee data via Deel.
[ACCORDION] Can clients change the employment country for employees if they move?
Once the Global Payroll Direct Employee contract has been created, they can not change the employment country on the platform. Please contact us for further assistance.
[ACCORDION] What is the difference between an employment agreement Contract Start Date and Deel Start Date?
The employee agreement Contract Start Date is the date agreed upon date between the client and the employee for when their engagement with the company starts.
The Deel Start Date is the first date for which payroll will be processed for the employment contract.
Example Scenarios:
The employee started at the company before the company joined Deel as a customer.
- The Contract Agreement Start Date is the day (in the past) when the employee started to work for the company.
- The Deel Start Date is the first day of the first payroll cycle managed by Deel.
The employee starts to work for the employer after the company joined Deel as a customer.
- The Contract Agreement Start Date is the start date written on the contract.
- This time the Deel Start Date is the same as the Contract Agreement Start Date because the payroll for this employee will be managed by Deel from the beginning of their contract with the employer.
[ACCORDION] How do clients delete draft employee contracts?
To delete a draft employee, select the People Icon. Both active and draft contracts will appear in the list.
Locate the draft contract that the client wants to edit or delete.
Review the contract details and employer cost quote (if applicable). Select either Delete or Reject to delete the draft.
[ACCORDION] Can someone else sign the contract that the client created?
Clients can sign contracts (agreements) themselves or have someone else sign on their behalf through a process known as delegate signing. They can invite any team member with Group Admin Access in Deel to sign as a delegate. If the chosen delegate does not have a Deel account, clients can invite them to sign as an external delegate.
An invitation to sign the contract as a delegate will be sent as an email via the Deel platform. Once the client signature is completed by the client or their delegate, the contractor can be invited to sign and activate the contract.
