Step 1 – Select the employee to be terminated
Select the People icon on the homepage, from the All People tab, and click the employee's name to open the summary page.
Step 2 – Schedule Termination
On the employee's overview page, click Schedule termination to begin the employee offboarding process.
Step 3 - Add termination type and dates
Select one of the following options:
- Resignation – When the worker decides to leave the job voluntarily.
- Termination – When the employer ends the worker’s contract.
Then, select the Last Day of Work and the Desired Contract End Date:
- Last Day of Work: The final day the employee will actively perform their duties. Access is typically removed on this date.
- Contract End Date: The final legal day of employment. The employee will be paid through this date, even if they are no longer working.
Note: In some cases, the client may be responsible for communicating the termination directly to the employee.
If backdating is allowed, clients will be able to view the logic and use the calendar to select a past date, up to the maximum period legally allowed for backdating.
Step 4 – Add termination details
Select if the employee termination is a voluntary resignation, or involuntary.
Clients may add supporting documents if needed.
If the client selects an involuntary termination, they will be asked to provide a reason for the termination.
If the employee being terminated is a manager with direct reports, the client will be prompted to select a new manager for those reports.
Step 5 – Finalize off-boarding payments
At this stage, clients will see the time-off balance for compensation as of the contract end date and must decide how to handle the payout for any remaining balance.
If Deel Time Off is enabled, this data will sync automatically. However, clients can choose to skip entering time-off details during the termination request and instead provide the accurate balance later, during the final payroll submission.
Clients can also add additional offboarding payments, either as a Cash Value or Time Value:
- Cash Value: Enter a custom severance amount, in addition to any mandatory statutory severance.
- Time Value: Add severance based on time, measured in days, weeks, or months.
Payments after termination can also be set by clicking Add under Post-termination Payout to schedule recurring or one-time payments after the contract has ended. These can then be edited or deleted via the agreement page under Recurring Payroll Items.
Additionally, clients can upload a termination letter if required.
Clients can also click the Add button to schedule post-termination payouts. These can be recurring payouts even after the employee contract ends, or a one-time payment to an off-boarded worker.
Step 6 – Review and submit the termination request
Review & submit the request to complete the process
When the termination request is confirmed, the client will see a banner on the employee's contract summary page.
